TikTok Offers Viewers Control to Decrease Artificial Intelligence-Made Content in Personal Streams

Users will soon have a updated setting that allows them to cut down on the volume of AI-created videos appearing in their timelines. This step comes as the service disclosed that it currently hosts over 1 bn AI videos.

Testing and Rollout

The update is being tested over the next few weeks before a global rollout. This advancement comes amid a surge in content created by AI, spurred by recent AI video creators.

AI Content on Other Platforms

It has been noted that almost one in 10 of the most rapidly expanding channels on a competing service exclusively feature clips produced artificially. A considerable share of this material is considered mass-produced AI material, a phrase for substandard, bulk-generated content that is typically illogical or dreamlike.

Our research shows that many people appreciate content made with AI tools, from digital art to informative clips, and we intend to provide users the power to increase or decrease of that, according to their own preferences,” said a platform representative.

AI on the Platform

The platform announced that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its network labeled as made with AI. In total, over 100 million media items are submitted to the service every day, making AI-generated material a minor part of its total content library.

Customizing Your Feed

Users will be able to limit or boost the level of AI content they see by using the “manage topic” setting in the application and selecting “AI-generated content”. Further subjects that currently be controlled under the tool include politics, fashion, beauty, and choreography.

Platform Guidelines

The platform’s policies oblige users to label convincing AI-generated content, and it prohibits harmful fake videos of celebrities or crisis events. Any realistic AI video that is unmarked can be removed under its terms of service.

Additionally, the app will henceforth apply an artificially created watermark to content made using its built-in AI features, or identified by an cross-platform project for recognizing content made by AI. This step is intended to stop users from trying to bypass the disclosure requirement.

AI Literacy Programs

TikTok is also launching a two million dollar awareness program for experts and organizations to develop educational content about responsible artificial intelligence. This program will benefit charitable organizations focused on teaching computer science.

Platform Protection

TikTok has supported its content review process, during controversy over proposals to make redundant a large number of safety staff in the UK. The company is expected to eliminate hundreds of positions in its content moderation department in its British office, with labor groups and online safety experts expressing worry that staff are being displaced by automated systems.

A trust and safety lead clarified that staff-based oversight would still have a role, but artificial intelligence can shield workers by filtering out the most harmful content ahead of it is viewed by people. TikTok stated a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content seen by safety staff over the previous year due to the use of its AI tools.

It is vital to balance staff and AI to ensure user safety,” she said. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we also think it’s extremely critical to reduce exposure to dangerous material as swiftly, which is why a significant AI assistance is really helping us process content quickly.”
